We also participate in mat training on Sundays, in Room 3220 of the
Natatorium, from 2:00-4:00 on Sundays. (Mat training is subject to
room availability, so please check with an instructor first.)
During mat training, we practice falling and rolling as well as various
throws, joint locks, chokes, escapes, and other techniques borrowed from
martial arts such as aikido. We typically finish practice with randori,
or free grappling.
Mat training serves as an excellent complement to karate, and we strongly
recommend participation to all students. Often techniques
in kata are best understood in terms of throwing and/or grappling,
and our practice on the mats helps us to become well-rounded martial artists.
